A Billy Bragg & Wilco Cover
In 1998, Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora commissioned the British songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg and the North American band Wilco to set to music some of the not yet musically edited lyrics from her father’s estate. This resulted in three albums entitled -Mermaid Avenue-.
On it also finds the present song about the Austrian composer, music theorist and author of many political writings Hannes Eisler. Eisler was persecuted by the Nazis because of his Jewish origin and his communist conviction and had to flee.
His most important station as an exile was the USA. There he was then expelled after the war because of his convictions. He lived in Prague, Vienna and East Berlin. Eisler composed the national anthem of the former GDR.
